Liberty was founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty. The company was initially known for exporting ornaments, fabrics and art from across the British Empire to London.
Liberty then became known also for specialist fabric prints which made it recognisable worldwide. Today, Liberty is a heritage British brand well known for its iconic department store located on central London's Regent Street and its innovatively designed Liberty branded printed fabric, sold to clothing manufacturers and department stores worldwide.

The Group operates as three business units:
- Retail is based at the Company's flagship store in central London, selling from approx. 80,000 square feet across six floors a wide range of luxury apparel, accessories, beauty products, gifting and homeware and it also includes a transactional online platform.
- Liberty Art Fabrics is the wholesale of branded seasonal and classic fabrics to business customers for use in the production of premium apparel. The business is renowned for its coloured and graphic patterned prints, and is supported by an archive of over 43,000 designs. Liberty Art Fabrics is a global business.
- Liberty London is the Company's re-launched own branded finished product line (scarves, accessories and gifting) which is also sold online and to international department stores.
